Twenty-one women: some, powerful international figures, others, interim leaders or figureheads with little influence on their countries--but each a pioneer, the first woman in her country to serve as the head of government.The women are Siramavo Bandaranaike of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka); Indira Gandhi of India; Golda Meir of Israel; Isabel Peron of Argentina; Elizabeth Domitien of the Central African Republic; Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo of Portugal; Margaret Thatcher of the United Kingdom; Vigdis Finnbogadottir of Iceland; Mary Eugenia Charles of Dominica; Gro Harlem Brundtland of Norway; Milka Planinc of Yugoslavia; Maria Liberia-Peters of the Netherlands Antilles; Corazon Aquino of the Philippines; Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan; Ertha Pascal Trouillot of Haiti; Kazimiera Prunskiene of Lithuania; Violeta Chamorro of Nicaragua; Mary Robinson of Ireland; Khaleda Zia of Bangladesh; Edith Cresson of France; and Hanna Suchocka of Poland. Some rose to power through the political ranks, several were propelled into office by violence, including assassinations and military uprisings. The ways to power and the ideas that shaped their careers are particularly examined.
