High on the hillOn a velvet nighWhile the moon is risingSeven wolves watch. The seven wolves watching on the hilltop are awaiting the birth of four wolf pups. The pups spend their first few days with their mother in the warm, dark den before venturing out into the world. There they meet and bond with the other wolves in the pack and explore their new surroundings. They also meet with danger; in a dramatic climax, one of the pups is attacked by an eagle and rescued by his father. In spare yet lyrical text and vivid paintings, this picture book offers an intimate and affectionate look at a fascinating animal. Kay Winters's meticulous research provides a mine of information about the lives and social behavior of wolves, and Laura Regan's oil and gouache paintings, with their exquisite detail and rich color, bring the wolf rack and their forest home to life.
My girls just loved this story of the wolves. Seven wolves waiting while the pups are being born. The eagle waiting for the pups to grow, so he can attack, the girl pup who is almost taken, but saved by father wolf at the last second. This story had my girls on pins and needles time and time again. Add to the mix that the book is beautifully illustraged and you have a book for toddlers and young readers that is just wonderful. A beautiful book

Wolf Watch by Kay Winters is one of those books that a child will read and remember when he grows up. It is not only beautifully illustrated (the paintings are breathtaking), but the prose is powerful and poetic as well. You really feel as though you are inside the wolf pack and the wolf's world. I was never particularly fond of wolves (Little Red Riding Hood and all), but after reading this book I have a much truer picture of this amazing animal. I am now a wolf fan and want to do what I can to help save the wolves. I wouldn't be surprised if this book inspired many children--and adults--to help save the wolf. It will also inspire children to care more about all animals, I think. Buy this book, read it yourself, and then give it to a child you care about.
My wolf loving son's favorite book

My 6 year old son loves this book. He has checked it out from his school libary about 4 times since the begining of the school year. This book is well written, with beautiful illustrations. The story is told in a sort of poetic manner. Sheds light on how wolf life is in a way that isn't bloody or scarey for younger children. My sons favorite animal is the wolf. Santa plans on bringing this book to my son for Christmas.
