I first read this book 30 years ago, as a medical student, and I have just re-read it. Wain, one of Britain's 'angry young men' has written a deeply moving book about one man's search for a meaningful life, love, connection to others. Deep, colorful, moving, but never maudlin, this books held me in its grip then and it did again now. I would have liked to write a letter to Wain, but in searchign the Net found that he died in 1995. Sad. You should see also his compillation of Boswel's diaries...
