Gritty plot, love and betrayal, not your ordinary western

My first reading of this author but definitely not my last. What could have been a trite plot with an arrogant cattle baron who can never have enough land or cattle is turned into a complex plot of good vs. evil, tradition and change, led by a hero who will not sacrifice his integrity for either money or a beautiful woman. Jim Bruce is assisted (in spite of himself) by Linda Gale, a "mesa woman" who asserts her independence. We today like to think of frontier women trying to keep up the crystal and china tradition in a hard land but we need to remember how tough they could be in defense of the people and places that they loved. Wild Horse River will hold your attention. There is enough action for any action lover and the more romantically inclined will not be disappointed either. But Overholser does not descend into mushiness or steamy sex nor do his characters spend pages in self-reflection so that you have to flip back a few pages to pick up the plot again. This is just a rousing good read that you will not want to put down.
