Cass Duval Garolini has come home to her father's ranch where he raises horses as a sideline to being sheriff in New Mexico. Mysterious Hidalgo County with its mining ghost towns. Now we have irrigated farms raising various crops and hot pepers. Heat and dust. Cass has come home with her son, Davey after her husband died. She was a renowned model but wanted security for her son. Out jogging she meets a virile stranger, who decides that he wants the "Widow Woman" as she is called. Cade Montoya is looking for a part-time job and scares Cassie without meaning to. When her father dies she takes over the job of sheriff and ends up hiring Cade but oh boy, do the hormones kick in big time. Well they did use some restraint as Cass was determined not to marry again and Cade was not into staying long in one place. He wants to organize a union for the Mexican laborers, being half-Mex himself and make the growers provide contracts with some health benefits. Trouble does start and leads to Cass being stranded in the desert near Hell's Furnace and needing rescue along with the man she went to find. It was an enjoyable read - touching on the laborers needs and romance of two seemingly incompatible people. Recommended --M
