This is a book about books, about the pleasures, passions, and rewards of reading, about authors dedicated to writing and readers who delight in words in the right order. It contains a rich selection devoted to this seductive subject, from Calvino's meditation on selecting a title in a bookstore to Woolf's essays on the joys of "the common reader," from Schwartz's "Ruined by Reading" to Eco's "How to Organize a Public Library." The book is illuminated by sixteen full-color paintings by Bascove, who here serves as editor, illustrator, and primum mobile. Produced to the highest standards, it is not only a gift for the literary, but also an inducement to the diffident.
This is a gorgeous book! It is filled with essays and poems and thoughts on reading, writing, and the love of books. The writings are from various authors some classic and well known and some I haven't heard of before. Some writings I liked a lot better than others. (-Regardless of the ones that didn't 'speak' to me, I still consider this a great collection of writings on the subjects I love.) The paintings are rich in color and detail and anyone who loves books/reading/writing will enjoy these highly eye appealing pictures that depict people with books! I'd love to have some of these to hang in my home! This is a beautiful gift for yourself or someone you know who loves the literary world. Buy it and enjoy!
treat yourself to this book

This is a perfect gift--but first give it to yourself. Bascove takes the same care selecting and arranging prose and poetry as she does composing her lush oils, which tell their own stories. I savored the book cover-to-cover, at one point stumbling up the subway steps because I had my nose buried in it. This is a singularly beautiful book in every way.
