The Meek will inherit the earth, but in the old days, the meek never inherited the Wild West, unless it was a patch of earth six-feet deep on Boot Hill. When the West Was Wild In Delaware Bend - A.K.A. Thief Neck - When the West Was Wild Volume 5. OUTLAWS VS LAWMEN AT DELAWARE BEND, DEXTER, COESFIELD and ORLENA. Disaster, Horse Theft and Murder on the Bend of the Red River in Grayson and Cooke County, Texas. When The West Was Wild in Delaware Bend, Orlena, Coesfield and Dexter. A lot of people think Denison or Sherman were wild towns in the Old West days, but the area this book covers may have had them beat. Out in extreme northwestern Grayson County, and northeastern Cooke County, a war was being waged just south of the Red River between outlaws and the lawmen trying to keep order: Delaware Bend, Orlena, Coesfield and Dexter. These towns were just south of the Red River on the border of what was called the "wild and bloody country" of the Indian Territory. Good people settled here before the Civil War to build ranches, farms, and businesses. Many bad men settled here too to hide because of the land's remoteness. In these regions, lawlessness reigned supreme, controlled only by a few overworked sheriffs, Marshals and Indian Policemen. This area became a haven for desperados, murderers, highwaymen and especially, horse thieves. Good people were being victimized. The whole area became known as Thief Neck. Horses and cattle were taken here to change owners via theft. Men went here to disappear and hide from the law. Many people just disappeared, victims of crime, and many came here to end their lives, dying by murder or the long arm of the law. Many lawmen "ended their watch" in the line of duty here at the hands of outlaws. Prepare for a wild ride in the wild west!
