When The Romans Came: A Refugee Story

I met a refugee in a country lane in Sussex last year. I suspect that he had been landed on the nearby beach at Pevensey. We didn't speak but it set me thinking about the experiences that he might have had on his journey to apparent safety. That dovetailed with a beginning of a book that I started to write in 1982 about the Iron Age people who lived on the Caburn in the Hillfort that you can still trace. In 1986 I was prompted to do some more work on it when some friends bought me a dictionary inscribed with the message, "Rearrange the contents of this book to make a best-selling book or play". Finally, in 2021, I've finished the book, although time will tell if it becomes a best seller.
Evidence suggests that the Caburn was attacked by the Romans, possibly at the instigation of other locals. This book explores what might have happened to one family, and one boy, in particular, before, during, and after that.
I used to be an archaeologist and the British Iron Age was a period that I studied in depth. Even so, a lot of this is book is me thinking creatively around what might have been based on what we know. I hope that you enjoy it.
