The heart-pounding story of a Texan boy's transformation to a Comanche brave and back again. With Pa off fighting in the Civil War, Lewallen Collier and his little sister are captured in a bloody Comanche raid. Admiring Lewallen's courage, the Indians give him the name Sings His War Song and try to teach him the ways of a young brave. But Lewtie dreams only of escape -- and of the day he can return to rescue little Eula Bee.
This was one of my favorite books growing up. I can still tell you exactly where to find it on the shelf in my hometown library! I purchased this copy to have for myself as well as a read aloud for my 6th grade class. I plan on recommending it to my daughter as soon as she reaches the appropriate reading level. I know she will love it as well :) It is a very well written story about a family that is attacked during a Comanche raid. The oldest brother and little sister are the only ones taken captive. Lewellen (the brother) escapes and finds help from their crabby neighbor. Together they go back to ransom Lewellen's sister and the neighbor's daughter. Intense and gripping. A great read at any age!
Great book.

If judging a book by its cover, I would not choose this book. I don't know how I came to read it as a kid, but I LOVED it. All these years later, it still comes to mind. I would definitely recommend this book to kids, and adults would probably enjoy it, too.

I read this book YEARS ago and it still stands out in my memory. It was my favorite book in elementary school and I also bought this for my daughter. It's amazing how what you read as a child can affect your adult life.
Loved This as a Child

I read this book several times when I was in elementary school. I have children of my own now and I wanted to give them a book I loved as a child. I always loved this book maybe because I have red hair just like Eula Bee. It's a good book to show children how powerful the love between siblings can be.
The book gives a side of the war one never gets to see.

I enjoyed the book and it wiill be well used in the classroom. I will be teaching the book and am looking forward to seeing my student's reaction to Lewtie and his "responsibility" to Eula Bee at such a young age. As well as the shocking truth of children in captivity in our own country. I am very interested in finding supplemental texts to this book.
