I don't know if other writer's find it hard to read the same book two or three times. I usually do,with the exception of certain authors, and Phillipa Carr (who is also Victoria Holt,if that is helpful to anyone) is one that I can. I have probably read this book in excess of 10 times over the past 20 years. There is nothing more appealing than being in love with twins! The way she weaves the mystery, romance and history all together in this novel is absolutely spellbinding. A sad ending in a way but yet so realistic and such ground work laid for the following in the series; "The Return of the Gypsy." If you are a Gothic Novel fan who loves suspense, it's a must!

This is a very good book with lots of excitement and lots of romance. I give it only 4 stars because of the ending.

I read this book some years ago and still reread it often. Ms. Holt, in my opinion, wrote some of the most memorable romances ever written. I was fortunate to find this copy and must say that it is worth finding. One of the best romances I've read.
