Violence Risk Scale

The Violence Risk Scale (VRS) is a risk assessment and treatment planning tool designed to assess the risk of violent and general offending and to guide the delivery of risk reduction treatment. The VRS uses the ratings of six static and twenty dynamic risk predictors to conceptualize, assess and quantify offending risk. A modified Stages of Change model has been integrated into the VRS to assess treatment readiness, motivation, and risk changes over time and/or with intervention. The VRS has been empirically validated for use among correctional and forensic mental health service users. The Violence Risk Scale (VRS) - Second Edition (2023) replaces the previous version of the VRS manual. In the updated edition, the rating descriptions for several static and dynamic predictors are clarified. Also included in the updated manual is some key information provided in VRS trainings, such as the use of Offense Analogue and Offense Replacement Behaviors to inform the Stages of Change (SOC) ratings and dynamic risk assessment, a SOC-specific interview guide, and more explicit rating guidance. The revision also highlights the utility of the VRS Calculator and Percentile Tables , derived from recent VRS research studies, to assist with risk communication and case formulation. The pre-treatment or Time 1 and post-treatment or Time 2 predictions of offending risk (as applicable) can be assessed using the VRS Calculator . The VRS Calculator, an Excel? based tool, uses logistic regression modeling of VRS total scores and VRS change scores to generate estimates of percentages of violent and general recidivism, or the absolute risks, for 3- and 5-year follow-up periods in the community. Percentile tables for VRS total, static, and dynamic variables and change scores are also available.
