In a book that fundamentally alters the terms of the current debate overeducation in America, Barber argues that rather than pursuing a debate definedby controversy over who should be taught, what should be taught, and how itshould be paid for, Americans must address education for what it is: thewell-spring of democracy in the United States. With such an education youngAmericans will gain nothing less than an apprenticeship in liberty--one groundedin a renewed commitment to community service--an idea that Barber put intopractice at Rutgers University, and one which President Clinton has enbraced asthe key to a revitalized America. This approach will provide Americans theliteracy to live in a civil society and the competence to participate indemocratic communities, while promoting an educational excellence that willmaintain America's economic, technical, and political preeminence in a rapidlychanging world. An Aristocracy of Everyone shows that education offers the only path towardrebuilding and reinvigorating the United States, and that this is a path we mustbegin to follow now.
I have been a Veronica fan since 1986. I read this sequel to Veronica the Showoff and Veronica Knows Best when I was a senior in highschool. Even from an adult's point of view I could love and identify with Veronica and Crystal's special friendship. I longed to reach out and take their hands. I felt like they were a part of me. Together they were a dream come true as friends, almost like soulmates. I was really moved by this book and parts of this book was a tear-jerker. I was just so touched!
