Loved every minute of it.

I loved every minute of it. The writing was excellent, the romance was great, but I especially loved the historical information it offered. The author is clearly an historian of the first order as well as a gifted storyteller. I await the sequel anxiously.

Tuscany

I too, was surprised by this book. I happend to be in Tuscany and looking for books to read in English. I stumbled on this one and thought I would take a chance. In spite of the books cover, the writing was superb. The only problem I had with the book was that the ending was left wide open. Now I am disappointed because there is not a sequal! I prefer books of this type to have more closure by the end, but she is such a great writer, it was definitely worth the read. I just now have to keep my eyes open for her next publication.

An escape to yesterday

Everybody dreams of Italy as a country of romance, of delightful legends and of bold, heroic emperors. A visit to this land of magnificent centuries-old buildings and vestiges of Roman imperial grandeur confirms the dream. The enormous barrier is language. Unless one knows Italian and its variants, the true flavour of the music, the romance and of the history, everywhere tangible but remotely mysterious, is not to be savoured. Moreover, it is very very seldom that one can catch a glimpse into the past of the Italian peoples. Almost impossible, unless, of course, one is able to escape to yesterday by reading this delightful book by Ms Johns. In addition to the historical journey, the reader is also propelled through a marvellous adventure as a plausible and beautiful heroine, Francesca, is faced with incredibly difficult situations and thrilling adventures. This was a book which surprised me for its intensity and because I just could not put it down! A refreshingly delightful and absorbing story! I am desperately looking for more books by this author!
