Tula Station is a novel told in three interwoven stories: the story of an orphan destined to live a Quixotic life in search of adventure; the story of a man who will forever be in love with his fantasy of a woman; and the almost true story of the once prosperous town of Tula, inaccessible to both trains and modernity in spite of the hopeful construction of Tula Station.Intelligent and subtle, Tula Station is a striking blend of the traditional and the contemporary.
Though I disagree with the San Francisco Chronicle blurb on the back cover "Told with a playful self-consciousness reminiscent of David Foster Wallace....", I did enjoy the book and will read more of Toscana's books. He does not display anywhere near the genius of Wallace, but does require patience in following the plot.

Superb. Subtle, well-sustained, gentle, affecting. Best fiction I've read in a long time.

What a thought-provoking, utterly refreshing book. Nice to go beyond magical realism and find this cool and contemporary Mexican writer.

What a funky, quirky, rich and refreshing story. Unlike anything I've read all year. If you or someone you know loves Mexico, and loves a subtle but hilarious story, AND wants to know one of Mexico's most important contemporary writers, buy this book!
