A well-considered humane anthology

Rabbi Sidney Greenberg put together this anthology as a book of comfort for mourners. Aside from his general introduction he contributes brief illumaniting introductions to each of the chapters. While the work focuses on Jewish ideas of grief, mourning and comfort it contains many selections by non- Jewish writers. It is tastefully done and some of the classic utterances of mankind on all related to death, grief and mourning are contained in this work. It concludes with a sermon of Milton Steinberg who died at the age of forty- six, in which he talks about mortality and appreciating life in all its beauty and greatness. This is a book about death which is meant to enhance life. It is very ably and honorably done.

A Treasure Indeed

You can't go wrong with this thoughtful collection of inspirational writings. Although the writings were gathered by a Rabbi I think anyone that has had a taste of the old testament would find most of the selections well within their tolerance level. It is a book I keep by my bed and pick up from time to time before sleep land takes over. It has helped me continue to cope with, not wallow in, loss.
