Originally published in 1958, this classic Australian novel won its 22-year-old author the Miles Franklin Award and the Gold Medal of the Australian Literature Society. Set in the north-west of Australia in 1957, the story concerns a Christian missionary who has lost his faith. This edition presents the revised version that Stow produced in 1981. Also includes Stow's introduction to the revised edition, dated 1991, and a new foreword by Anthony J. Hassall, author of a critical study of Stow's literature, 'Strange Country'. Author was awarded the 1979 Patrick White Award. His other publications include 'Visitants' and 'Tourmaline'.
