Dark past, present redemption - and a hero who really CARES!

The book opens with Lady Surrey (Margaret) holding a bloody knife and in shock, having just killed her husband Phillip in self defense. He had murdered their newborn son because the babe carried the deformity that had cursed Phillip's family line for generations, then he had turned on Margaret...which cost him his life. Covered in blood and completely numb, Margaret obeys the midwife and finds herself alone on the road from Kent to London in freezing weather. Collapsing by the roadside, she is discovered by the famous highwayman Captain Scarlet, who picks her up -- only to be captured and tossed into Newgate, with the soldiers believing Margaret his accomplice. Regaining consciousness within the prison's walls, Margaret (now known as Meg) comes to know Captain Scarlet as Kincaid. He is gentle, loving, and kind, and he has an honorable reason behind his highway robbery. I thought it was refreshing to finally find a hero who makes you want to melt instead of flare up in anger. He is not stubborn, arrogant or blinded by pride, but generous, loving, and he seeks to accept Meg even without knowing her past, and to heal her with his love and persistence. It is a beautiful and believable love story between a man determined to win his woman's love and heal her spirit, and a young woman scarred by a violent marriage, guilt for having killed her husband and grief for her dead child... But even after Kincaid and his contacts get them out of Newgate in a daring escape, Meg knows she is not safe, for her husband had a brother, a man twisted with hate because of his deformity, a man who will hunt her down in revenge, for the death of his brother, and out of hatred for her perfection. There are more twists to the story, like a missing debutante, a smitten friend, Kincaid's true identity...
A terrific read!

Colleen Faulkner is a gem. Her characters come alive. This heroine and hero were born for each other. I knew the ending would be a happy one, but it didn't seem possible. This author has a rare talent.
