A richly illustrated overview of the great architecture of the world combines detailed descriptions, trivia, entertaining anecdotes, and more than 150 photographs and architectural renderings as it looks at such memorable structures as Stonehenge, the Empire State Building, the Taj Mahal and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
I don't know very much about architecture but I do know that the best architecture is an art. That's why I enjoy looking at, visiting, photographing, and sometimes writing about buildings and structures. GREAT BUILDINGS OF THE WORLD is a special edition book released by the editors at TIME magazine that if filled with photographs and information about some of the most famous, unique, interesting, and odd buildings in the world. The book is divided into nine chapters and includes a forward and index. The chapters are divided into a theme: influential stylistic buildings, buildings where famous leaders live, places of worship, homes, art houses, places of entertainment, structures where people work. The last chapter doesn't quite fit into a theme and is entitled "Building that surprise us". It includes structures made from glass, buildings built out of the land, suspended buildings, famous hotels and motels, and buildings that look like objects. The Pyramids of Giza, the Taj Mahal, the Schloss Neuschwanstein (Cinderella's Castle), Chateau of Versailles, Angkor Wat, the Louvre, the Parthenon, the Colosseum, and the Empire State Building are all featured as well as many other buildings. There's even a tribute to the World Trade Center. As someone who likes to learn and who at least has an appreciation for architecture, I enjoyed reading GREAT BUILDINGS OF THE WORLD. The book doesn't go into very much detail about the different structures, but is full of nuggets of architectural trivia and provides a good overview.
