Morton was a well known journalist / travel writer of his day and i found this book very impressive as he went through the lands of the Bible, talking about his encounters; those he met, the sights and sounds, experiences and his biblical "discoveries" on his travel journies from Egypt to Trans-Jordan to Iraq, Syria, edge of Turkey, back to Egypt and on to Rome. As he goes he quotes from many sources and give us the places of biblical historical significance and other history of interrelated places and people. Such as Simeon the Stylites - the hermit who lived on a high column for 30 years! Various monastries, known and unknown, different monks, early Christianity in Egypt and Ireland, Hykos expulsion,. various oasis, travel by train, car, coach and donkey, St. Anthony - the founder of monasitc life, lots of Egyptian temples and how Muslims copied early Christianity in their prostrations and prayers! Fasdcianting insights into culutre and customs, all before WWII. All in all a fascinating and very enjoyable hardcover book with a good number of black and white photograpths and 2 maps of his travels, though the latter is a map of Rome without his actual route path.
