This book clearly explains how nuclear reactors work, and even gives background information on the growth of the nuclear power industry. Other nuclear accidents that did not get such media attention are discussed; so are the effects of the TMI near-meltdown on the surrounding area and its residents, as well as on the nation. (Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter's visit helped to calm the national paranoia.)The illustrations are good; especially interesting are the photos of local people dealing with the frightening events. One photo is of a local nurse, Jean De Angelis--the author's mother--who helped set up a fallout shelter for evacuees from Middletown and Harrisburg, PA. Interviews with locals also keep readers riveted. There are few other books out there on this subject for young people; De Angelis' research is far and away the most thorough. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a clear and accurate overview of what happened at Three Mile Island in 1979.
