The entrance of three women playwrights onto the theatrical scene in the London season of 1695-1696 and the flurry of productions of plays by women that season excited some derogatory criticism, including a satire titled The Female Wits, which lampooned Catherine Trotter, Delarivi re Manley, and Mary Pix. These women were prolific professional writers in the mainstream of the literary scene of their time. This book presents their biographies, analyzes their plays and other works, and evaluates their place in the history of theatre as well as their influence upon the English drama of the eighteenth century.
