Years after a global crisis, caused by male aggression and religious fervour, human society is reordered. Only women are allowed to hold offices of high rank or lead a family. Unmarried men are given the title of Freeman and allowed to pursue a career but only under the oversight of women. Into this milieu, we meet Kenneth Keach, a man with a hobby he'll like to keep secret. The Confederate Solar Provinces frown on the kinds of things he likes to read. Freeman Keach has just been employed as the chief of Rainbow Station. Kirkland Gas and Mineral tapped him to lead their mining efforts on Enceladus. He just has to get there in one piece. The Columbia Star, a KGM freighter, transports him along the glide path to Saturn. He'll have to avoid pirates, proposals and the plans of an ambitious woman who heads the government of Saturn Province. Once he reaches the city of Bright, his contraband and his life are both in jeopardy.
