The Whiskey Rebellion of 1791 - 1794 was an important historical event that is customarily overlooked. It was a frontier-wide movement that came to be centered southwestern Pennsylvania. The Rebellion came about due to an excise tax, payable on manufacture, on whiskey -- an important means of barter in a cash-poor frontier economy. It placed an inordinate burden on impoverished farmers in what was then the westernmost reaches of the young American republic. The Rebellion grew into a full-blown insurrection that threatened the administration of President George Washington himself. The author, a native of the region in which the major events took place, undertook a systematic study of the Rebellion. In his "Informal History" he presents the results of his research along with personal insights and observations. Other writings in this volume include "An Informal History of the Horror Movie" and a recollection of the early days of the Marvel Comics Group. Shorter essays range over a variety of topics from the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Burt Reynolds, to modern warfare, to manned space exploration, to beach party movies.
