This book is an illustrated version of my great-grandfather's diary that he wrote when he served as a surveyor on the 1878 Hayden Geophysical Survey of Yellowstone. I was able to associate some of the William Henry Jackson's photographs with his references to Jackson taking the photograph. He named some of the lesser geysers and his name appears on numerous maps of the Yellowstone Basin. The original diary is at Yellowstone. His journey began south of Jackson Hole and he passed the Grand Tetons on his way to Yellowstone. He later homesteaded outside of Red Lodge with one of the first settlor women to come to that area.
