What a Wonderful story ..by an outstanding writer. You are immediately drawn into the story and its main Character Isaac, who is a little old man..with not much to live for..he lost his son..at 10 yrs of age..due to illnesses and just being a very weak child..from when he was born. He's lost his Wife..not to many years after his son...and even his beloved Watch repair shop..that was handed down from his father..is closed for 2 yrs now..under German occupation and Rules..saying Jews cannot own a business. He finds himself on a cattle car traveling through the Bavarian countryside..to wind up at a concentration camp.. Dachau...when they find his leather pouch that holds his precious tools for repairing watches..they pull him from the barracks ...to work at a Senior officers home...to repair a Grandfather clock that was gifted to Herr Becher from the high command. He tells Isaac, if you fix the clock..there will be other things I can have you do. Isaac knows...as long as he can continue to use his skills and fix what Herr Becher gives him..it will keep him here as long as possible. At the same time..there is a young women Anne.....who also works for The Becher household, cleaning, scrubbing, waiting on the Becher's...When Anne and Isaac finally meet...they instantly form a friendship.
And maybe more. They are constantly in danger...from the Becher's mean spirited wife and the guards...The Becher's young son Fredrick is sent home from boarding school and he...has no one..his mother acts like he doesn't exist...talking down to him constantly , never showing an ounce of affection or any act of kindness even in her words...his father..is stern..but at least acknowledges he is even eating dinner with them . Frederick eventually meets Isaac, and Anne..and forms a close bond...with them both..that will help him to exist in a house where he has nothing but his room and books and a few toys. As the story goes on...you are introduced to a few different characters that pull it all together. You feel their pain, and suffering, and feel their cold and hunger and Tiredness..and Hope and Hopelessness...in such a mean horrible dangerous place as Dachau. There is SOOO much more to this story...their unforgettable losses, and hardships, and courage... to try to cling to life and hope. Its RICH with Descriptions of their tragic lives...and you can't help but feel and love the characters. Carly Schabowski is a FANTASTIC writer...telling her stories in perfect detail ! This is a Wonderful endearing story...deserving of 5 stars ! An Excellent read...you won't easily forget just because of the way she writes and touches your heart through her stories and characters. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
