More dramatic than jolly!

We have the Norwegian version of this book, and it's a page-turner, with a shipwreck, a quagmire, and lots of other adventures as the children try to make their way back home. Takes place in 1686. The original title is "Die Reise mit der Jolle" and won a German illustrated-book prize in 1981. P.S. A "jolly boat" is another word for dinghy or yawl, ie a small boat.
