Not one of my favorites by this author

I have read all of her other books & I normally really enjoy the way she writes. Unfortunately, this one was all over the place. Not sure if this was supposed to be a book about friendship, a critique of that region's Italian food, or a story of what an adopted home can become; or maybe all of these things? Compared to her other books it just didn't fit together very well.
