This is an excellent book. It vividly describes in great detail the Battle of Kursk, the biggest tank battle in history. It is not only the biggest tank battle in history but also the longest battle, of any kind, in history. It lasted for fifty ( 50 ) days! The statistics were staggering. German losses were: 70,000 men killed, 2900 tanks, 195 mobile guns, 844 field pieces, 1392 planes and more than 5000 motor vehicles destroyed. Operation Citadel, as the battle was called, chewed up the fighting heart of German armor. From August 1943, when the battle ended, to the end of the war, the German armies on the Eastern Front were forced to remain of the defensive.

I agree, it SHOULD BE reprinted: it goes down as a classic

I asked my history teachers about The Battle of Kursk, they had no idea what I was talking about. This book is soo captivating that I was going nuts with excitment as the battle approached. Very Very Well written. This is a rare book that immerses you so much that if your house was on fire, you wouldn't notice it!

Gripping Writing, Historical Detail: Should Be Reprinted

Manages to combine historical detail with novelistic-style drama: historical writing in one of its better forms. The battle of Kursk, including preparations and aftermath, are recounted with objectivity and clarity. Great reading!

A true "Must-read" for any serious study of World War II

Kursk Salient, 5 July 43. German forces attack Russian Front. The beginning of the fifty day combat that would have no equal before or since was underway. As the original reviewers of this engrossing work proclaimed in 1974 " This book belongs on the shelf of every serious student of military history." (Ernest Gann author of "In the Company of Eagles")I believe that the author, Martin Caiden, has given an excellent recreation of this massive engagement, the word "battle" being insufficient to describe the scope of this fight. Drawing from primary sources and eyewitness accounts, Mr. Caiden also makes keen observations as to the "small details" and "mistakes" which often proved to be the difference between victory, stalemate or defeat. I sincerely hope that this fine work will be available to the public once again. Current events prove once again that history is often repeated, and so are the follies of those who do not heed the lessons history can teach.
