This story is set back in the 18th century in a time where the English have taken over Scotland and made it a crime to wear their clan plaids, play bagpipes or even carry a weapon. Megan is the daughter of recently deceased Scottish Laird and resistence leader the Black Wolf. In order to keep the resistence strong, she acts as the Black Wolf's proxy keeping his death a secret. She is captured by English soldier Rolf St. James. Rolf is an honorable soldier and leader of men who has been sent to capture the Black Wolf for execution for treason and to bring peace between the English and Scots. He is misunderstood and wrongly blamed for the mysterious death of his wife. To add fuel to the fire his left hand was mangled in a fight and he keeps on a black glove adding to the rumors of a dark soul. He captures Megan in a raid searching for the Black Wolf and decides to use her to draw out the wolf. These two face the challenge of finding out that the prejudices they have against one another are not reality. Rolf finds out Megan is strong and passionate, not like the weak women he is used to and he feels a woman is his match for the first time in his life. Megan finds out that not all Englishmen are abusers of women and children who lie and cheat and gain property through the misfortune of others. Rolf is an honorable, gentle man who keeps his word. When they discover these truths they start falling in love. Some people who like the spicy frequent love scenes may be disappointed. There are only a couple of love scenes in this book and they are brief and not very descriptive. However, the author lets these characters develop depth that other novels may not take the time for and it is a refreshing change. You feel you understand a bit what makes these two tick. I recommend this book especially for those who like the Scottish romances. The only flaw is a little more time could have been spent developing the romantic relationship. Otherwise, it is a great story to read.
