Clearly a work of a pre-Civil Rights era,

Texas historian and academician first published his ground breaking revisionist history "The Texas Republic: A Social & Economic History" in 1946. His major innovation was to present the lives of ordinary people as well as the major military and political icons that had dominated the field with prior histories of the Lone Star State. Professor Hogan produced a history that was immensely popular with both academia and the general reading public. Long out of print, the Texas State historical Association has brought this landmark Texas history back into print for the edification of a new generation of students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in Texas history. Clearly a work of a pre-Civil Rights era, the role of African Americans and Tejanos is largely ignored. Nonetheless, "The Texas Republic: A Social & Economic History" is highly recommended reading as an example of how the portrayal of Texas history was beginning to turn away from an exclusive focus upon the great men of the Republic period, toward a more comprehensive perspective that would include the lives, contributions and accomplishments of common citizens. Of special note is the new and informative introduction to this classic work by Gregg Cantrell who holds the Emma and Ralph Lowe Chair in Texas history at Texas Christian University.
