I now own both books by Carol Russell on this subject. Both books were meant to be self-teaching, and much of the information in book two is a repeat from book one with the difference of additional images more in line with each chapter. However, book one is still chocked full of 'how to' info on techniques, yarn types, cartoons (patterns) and all kinds of tips and tricks that make up the fabric called tapestry. I must note that to use this book, the newbie should be a book literate person. The images in book one do not necessarily correspond with each chapter and one must search the images to find the techniques mentioned, and once you now what to look for it isn't all that hard to find. There are many good woven examples on technique and color value. Since this book is out-of-print, it is well worth purchasing to add to your collection of tapestry books. There is historical information as well, but the main focus is to be able to teach yourself the art of tapestry weaving where a human mentor is unavailable, and this book achieves that effort.
