A good and suitable account of the first battle of the American Civil War written for children
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
Every student of American history knows that the first battle of the American Civil war was the bombardment of Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Ironically, no Union soldier was killed or even seriously wounded in this Confederate victory. This book, written for the elementary school child, describes this battle and the role of the fort in the entire war. As is the case with nearly all histories written for children, some liberties are taken to make it more appealing. There is an account of a young boy named Danny and his feelings about having to evacuate and there are statements of exact conversations between opposing commanders. However, this is more than offset by the descriptions of the feelings of the opposing officers as they dealt with the situation of being at war with each other. Although the start of the war elicited great passions on both sides, many people still had deep regrets about the course of events. Therefore, overall it is a good account of this first battle of a great and costly war.
