The Spirit of the Mountains by Emma Bell Miles is a book written by a very gifted and intelligent woman who chose to marry a mountain man and live among the mountain people and learn their customs and very different ways.It is mostly a thinly disguised book based upon her actual life and that of her "In Laws" and neighbors.She had a life of extreme poverty and died at 37 years of age.I live on Signal Mountain not far from where Emma and Frank Miles and their four children lived.This book is an accurate account of the real mountain people,their stubborn ways(from Scottish ancestors).Cabin Homes(chapter two),Grandmothers and their Sons(chapter three),and Supernatural(chapter six) are probably the best.Her account of the Mountain Woman's life is heartbreaking and so true.The part about poor Mary Burns alone is worth the price of the book.A must read for anyone interested in "REAL" mountain life.
