I found there was a lesson learned in this book. It was a lesson in the ways the human mind calculates, examines and questions it's beliefs. How guilt can eat away at the human mind. Almost immediately after striking the sheperd boy, there begins a process of justification with God, constant praying, fear, denial, guilt, lies and in the end.. well I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't read it yet, so I'll leave it at that. I do think that the present person in the white house, who claims to be the reborn christian and the "chosen one" should read this book. It would've taught him the lesson he needed to learn as a child and it may have saved a lot of lives! Lives lost in lies, greed, recklessness and destruction. A very good read and the characters are very interesting and develop well throughout the story. I look forward to the next novel by Mr. Allan.
An intimate look at childhood & culture

A remarkable novel that delves into the mind of two boys caught between North and South American culture. I especially enjoyed the way the author captures the inner life of the two boys and the dynamics of their family life. This is a tragic novel but, like the best tragedies, its depth and richness made reading it, for me, a moving and poignant experience.
