Matobi! It's the story of friendship, secret clubs, codes and exploration, all set along a beach and on an island. I picked up this book last year at the friends of the library shelf maintained by the Dublin library in Starbuck's on Regional Road. I chose it because I like Arnold Lobel's illustrations and as it's an "I Can Read" book it's perfect for Sean who is now learning how to read. At the moment it's one of a select number of books in rotation for me to read to Sean while he's taking his evening bath. The Secret Three is one of the many books that Arnold Lobel illustrated for other authors. In this story by Mildred Myrick, two boys spending the summer at the beach find a third friend by way of a message sent in a bottle. The story has a nice introduction to how tides work and some basic cryptology as the boys send encrypted messages to each other.

My mother originally read this book to me back in the 1960s. I always loved it and saved it with all my other books. Now as a mom I am again enjoying reading it - this time to my son who is in Kindergarten. He loves this story and we read it again and again.

It's realy too bad that Ms. Myrick didn't write any more books. This little jewel is perfect for little boys. My son, age 4, loved it. Three little boys form a club while at the seashore by using the changing tide to send messages in a bottle.
