Clear-headed Lila Douglas never believed in love at first sight--until she fell hopelessly in love with her dashing second cousin, Alastair Russell. Ever since, she's dreamed of future meetings that... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is the first regency I've ever read (and I've read a lot!) Where the book is written in the first person. It definitely took some getting used to and I think over all something was missing from this book. Regency Romances are generally first and foremost, well... romances! The one sided narration took away from the romance because, while we could see Lila's interest in the Earl grow and develope we have absolutely no clue why he is in love with her. The book seemed more of a Gothic written in the regency period other than anything else. However it was well written and the story developed nicely (although one part of the ending involving Alaistair Russell was a little odd). All in All a good read but not great. Interesting for it's deviation from the patterncard writing of Regencys but not much else.
Fascinating fiction

I expected a treat from Barbara Hazard and as usual she didn't disappoint me. Tension builds as you enter the drafty old castle and our heroine clashes with the hero. Not standard fare; this is a special book with excellent insight on the period and restrictions involved. I highly recommend it.
Regency Romance or perhaps a who-dunn-it

This book by Barbara Hazard is a little different, it definitely evolves there are elements of a gothic novel at the start, it seems then to move into a who-dunn-it, complete with twists and red herrings and finishes as a traditional Regency Romance. Written in the first person, I was a little surprised by one character mentioning a chance of frostbite in Scotland by the sea but not bad overall. More a 3 and a half stars than a 4.
