October 31, 1517 is the day Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, thus beginning the Lutheran Reformation. A cursory reading of these 95 statements demonstrate that they do not reflect the primary controverted theological issues that were at stake in the Reformation. From a theological perspective, the Reformation actually began two years later when Luther uncovered the truth of justification by grace through faith in what has been called his Tower Experience. Justification is the cardinal doctrine of the Reformation. Every Lutheran distinctive, whether the distinction between Law and Gospel, the doctrine of the two kingdoms, vocation, the saints, is built upon the teaching of justification by grace through faith. The sad truth is that many who are a part of churches who find their identity in the Reformation do not understand this central doctrine.
