When things don't turn out as Gigi planned, Dad helps Gigi understand that we each have unique, God-given gifts. When Gigi and her best friend, Frances, try out for The Purple Ponies soccer team, the competition is stiff. DiscouragedBut Dad helps a discouraged Gigi learn that everyone has certain talents and perhaps her talents don't include soccer. As it turns out, Frances makes the team but wants to wait until next year because it wouldn't be as much fun without her best friend on the team. After some royal thinking, Gigi comes decides they both can be part of the Purple Ponies. Frances plays on the team and Gigi becomes a cheerleader for the team. It's a delightful story that shows God has given each of us different abilities, and we need to use them to the best of our ability. Scripture theme: We all have different gifts. Each gift came because of the grace God gave us. --Romans 12:6

We Heart Gigi!

My kids are huge fans of David Shannon books (as am I). They have them all, and so I was searching for something new that would be equally appealing. It is difficult to find adventure books whose style and story-telling are just right for early readers. Most tend to be too simple, boring and predictable. They sadly lack originality... especially among Christian books. I was pleasently surprised when I came across Sheila Walsh's "Gigi" series. Gigi is fantastic... a spunky little girl who, along with her best friend Frances, finds herself in new situations that any little girl can relate to. My 6 year old daughter is entertained by the stories and enjoys Gigi's slightly dramatic, but big-hearted personality. (With good reason! LOL!) As for "The Purple Ponies" in particular, this book quickly became one of my daughter's favorites since she played her first season of soccer this year. Again, I love that these stories are based on age-appropriate situations. My children become very involved in the books, and the stories help them handle the events that happen in their own lives. As well as get them excited about reading! I also bought a few "Will" (Gigi's male counterpart) books for my 5 and 8 year old sons. They love them as well... full of fun adventures and fantastic illustrations! I'm very pleased I purchased "Gigi" and "Will". They are going to be in our family library for quite some time, as my kids want to read them over and over again.
