Are birth defects more common among women who use birth control pills early in pregnancy or within two months prior to pregnancy? Does prior use of the pill have any good effects on the baby? How does exercise affect the mother and fetus? What are the benefits of breast feeding? How safe are antibiotics for pregnant and nursing women? analgesics? drugs used to treat hypertension? other drugs? What effects do marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, barbiturates and anxiety-reducing drugs have on pregnancy? Can contraceptive gels, creams or foams harm a fetus? How dangerous is the radiation emitted by household appliances such as microwave ovens, radios and television sets? What are the reproductive risks associated with the use of video display terminals or VDTs?
I really enjoyed this book, but I can see how some women might not. This is not a book to read cover-to-cover, nor is it light reading. It is a reference book, and it really lays out the facts. If you are comfortable with medical jargon, and you want more information than you'll find in the typical pregnancy books, check this one out. I wanted to know more about WHY I couldn't have certain medications, what studies had shown, etc. I found answers to many questions in this book that either weren't in the other books or weren't covered in depth. This is a good book if you're not content with being pat on the head and told to listen to your doctor. It's also a good book if you've got medical conditions and want to do some extended research. But don't rely on it alone. It's best as a suppliment to a book like What to Expect.
Satisfying and easy to read

This is an excellent book. The best thing about it is the way the author backs up all of his statements with studies; he doesn't just spout notions. I found it very satisfying to be able to see where the advice originated.
Excellent - covers all medical questions in detail.

I borrowed it from a friend and am now buying it myself! It has all the answers to the many questions a pregnant woman may have on pregnancy health. (diseases, medications, nutrition etc).Comprehensive, an excellent reference guide that is very reassuring. Explains in understandable terms what docters don't always have the ability or time to explain.
