The Samuel Putnam's the Portable Cervantes is a very well written book. It is a very helpful book to have around but does not replace the original. To read the original Don Quixote is a unique experience, only comparable to read Shakespeare and Dante in the original. It is no kidding! Cervantes's major work is a fantastic book.
