This Novel starts just before the second world war in a Northern industrial town. The Old Bookshop is run like clockwork and very regimented. We find out later why. George, a widower and his son Tim are there every day. There are strange noises coming from the bookshelves but no one is there. Tim loves to read and enjoys losing himself in books. To get away from the tedium and the threat of war he imagines he is one of the characters in the books. Book can do that if you like them enough. The noises continue, tragedy strikes and Tim is left on his own. With George's dying breath he tells his son to keep going, whatever happens you must carry on. After his father's passing, he discovers his dad was a soldier in WW1. Tim decides to board the shop up and goes off to fight when he is old enough. The books are now on their own. One book called Teach Yourself to Speak English by Gustave Clonk got very bored and started to read the pages of its own book. It learned by moving its spine in certain special ways it could talk. With this new learning it teaches other books to speak. Many characters within the books now talk while bombs drop outside. Then a book called How to Perform Real Magic becomes involved and things go onto a different level. Tim returns long after the war has ended...?
