Fifty years of social change through cartoons
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
The New Yorker is considered by many, including some outside New York City, to be the best literary magazine in the world. The quality of the articles is first rate and it is the place to go if your interest is in current intellectual thought. Even the cartoons have an intellectual bent, although they often poke fun at the arrogance of intellectualism and the snobbishness of the privileged class. Over the fifty years covered in this volume, you can see many changes in the social fabric of the country. The style of dress and the dialog change dramatically from the start to the end, but the cartoons remain entertaining throughout. While most of them can be understood by anyone, a bit of historical knowledge is necessary if you are to understand some of those from the earlier years. For example, the cartoon where a young boy sees an Indian wearing a feathered bonnet and cries, "Quick mama - look! President Coolidge!" makes little sense to anyone unfamiliar with the classic picture of Coolidge wearing that headgear. Sometimes we read books for knowledge, other times we do it for fun. In this case, you can have a lot of fun looking through these cartoons.
