As the number of people suffering from depression rises, so does the number of treatments that flood the market. In this new third edition, Harvard Medical School professor William S. Appleton shares the latest research findings and treatment techniques, along with illuminating case histories, to answer readers questions about the new antidepressants and antianxieties. This practical guide includes information on: - The newest antidepressants--Lexapro and Cymbalta - Treating anger and irritability, conquering insomnia - A preview of future treatments - How and when to get off the drugs - Side effects such as sexual dysfunction, weight gain, and insomnia This completely revised and updated edition gives a balanced view of the pros and cons of antidepressants and up-to-the-minute information on all the latest medications and treatments being used to treat depression.
I recommend this book to both patients and the families of patients who are taking psychiatric drugs. It strips away medical jargon and cuts to the chase and which drug is which, what drug does what, which drug belongs in what class. For families, who may have not been there when the drug was prescribed to and explained to the patient, it may provide some real relief in understanding what their loved one is taking; it can demystify the process. This book is also fairly up-to-date. Not all the lastest drugs are covered, but, at the rate mental medicine moves, you can't really expect that. It's written in clear, down-to-earth language that isn't condescending, and it's not alarmist. It balances the fine line between total pharmacutical management of illness and recognizing the need for therepy, too. It does not do to much with herbs; this is for people who are going to stick with the FDA approved side of things, FYI.
Sexual Side Effects

I think the previous reviewer must have not read the book. Dr. Appleton does mention many times the sexual side effects of antidepressants. This is the best book on antidepressants. I gave it as a present to two psychiatrists friends of mine and they were really impressed.
In these confusing times, with so much conflicting advice, Dr. Appleton's updated book is wonderfully clear and without prejudice. Dr. Appleton has never taken any money from a drug company and so he is able to write an honest book. He understands what depression is and how it can harm your life and he offers a realistic and TRUSTWORTHY view of the drugs. Anyone considering taking an antidepressant or caring for a depressed friend or relative should consider this book required reading. It's written so clearly, while grounded in careful research, that it is easy to understand and makes the decision to use a drug (or try a different one) simple and less fearful. I have bought many copies for friends who agree. 3rd Edition is completely up-to-date.
