Pleasantly cool and matter-of-fact, Oregon is no place for a magic realist and yet the visit by Isabel Vargas (or is she Raquel Balabuena?) becomes the catalyst for several implausibly Happy Ever Afters, guaranteeing readers their choice of cheerful, if somewhat unlikely, resolutions, a sparkling illustration of the principal character's advice: 'Reality becomes real to the extent that it resembles Fiction.' Or is it the other way around?
