This is right up there with Frog and Toad are Friends, and Owl at Home (that is to say, it's better than the very good Where the Wild Things Are). I'm 27 now but I can still remember enjoying this masterpiece. The stories--all about "monstrous" children and their antics (kicking each other under the dinnig table, skipping school, the vanity of little girls) are very charming. But the real value comes from Edward Gorey's s illustrations. Gorey died on April 15, 2000, so all of his books are precious--he's the artist that drew the animations for PBS' "Mystery" series. All of his illustrations have an refined and elegantly macabre feeling. I.e., all of the monsters and ghouls are dressed for a formal cocktail party. Kids love that! I think you will too.
