Book Overview

It's time to get real--that is, real, do-it-yourself horse training. Professional trainer Sean Patrick has created the ultimate guide to the "complete" riding horse--whether a performance, working, or "just for fun" prospect. Quite simply, you begin at Lesson Number 33 and count your way down through the basic exercises--the "primary education" --every horse needs. And when you get to Lesson 1, you've done it; you've prepared your horse for advanced work in any number of equestrian disciplines. You can't get lost along the way. There's no room for confusion. Sean clarifies the point and explains the gist of every step. The happy result? He trains you to be a trainer. Whether your horse is a foal or five, guilelessly green or imperfectly veteran, he will benefit from the Countdown-- ;a true "foundation" program, serving to prepare him for the endless variety of activities and "jobs" horses perform today. From indispensable handling, "sacking-out," and tying exercises, to how you, the rider, can control the different parts of the horse's body from the ground and the saddle; from mounting on both the left and the right to performing flawless flying lead changes, you'll be amazed at how effective and efficient this program is.

Awesome book

I have seen a lot of DVDs that are currently available on horse training and some of these are very helpful, but this book is a fantastic step by step reference manual. I just study the lesson I want to work on and then go do it. The lessons are very clearly described and easy to understand. This is a must have book for anyone wanting to improve their skills in training horses. If your horse could talk he would ask you to get.

The Best "How To" Book Ever

I have read most of the popular natural horsemanship training books -- Parelli, Clinton Anderson, John Lyons, Linda Tellington-Jones, etc. Sean Patrick's "Countdown to Broke" is absolutely hands-down the best natural horsemanship book I have read. It is a detailed step by step "how to" make a horse. I am training my 2 yr. old gelding and Sean's lessons work. It is so rewarding to see a youngster improve and with Sean's book you are certain to see results if you follow his instructions. He goes into detail and its easy to follow. I have become a huge fan of Sean Patrick.

Awsome Book

I have been searching for a way to train my Mustang, she is bull-headed and at times dangerous, I was just about to give up on her and turn her into a pasture pet when I came across Sean's book. I was so impressed with his book that I looked him up to find his training facility is 30 minutes from my house! I have since been riding with Sean for the last month, just about 12 hours is all, but the difference in my horse is amazing. I have ridden with other trainers but nobody has every broken it down into such a clear, understanding and helpful format. As Sean says, "You have to be fair and clear, if you are fair and clear when asking your horse to do something then that horse will try until he gets it right". Sean has showed me how to ask fairly and my horse is saying YES!!! This book has changed my life and is giving me the tools I need to change my horse into a horse that I enjoy being with.

Highly recommnded

This is a marvelous book in its clarity and easy to follow lessons and photos. Sean and Alisha present a step-by-step, easy to follow method to bring your horse along. I especially appreciate that the language is correct and not loaded with "cute" jargon. I only wish I did not live so far from their barn as I would very much enjoy training with them. You will not be disappointed with this book and the practical approach to training.

Finally!

This new book is exactly what I wanted. I've been reading and learning about training steps and methods for some time, but kept running into dead ends when I was not sure what to do. This book spells it out. It begins with a "first touch" on a young horse, which can also be any horse of any age, and in the proper order gives me the steps to take my horse all the way through a foundation of training. It tells me what I need, what the horse already needs to know, and when it is alright to quit that lesson and move on. It is the best teaching book I've found. I like when he gives Roadblocks and Rider's Blocks where problems or challenges may arise on behalf of the horse or rider...it's the "what if's." The pictures are clear and beautiful and help explain the lessons. I have two riding horses that need to go back and start over on some of their learning and a young filly that I am going to take through the entire program. I really like this book.
