Book Overview

2013 Reprint of 1959 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In August 1958 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., preached two sermons, "What is Man?" and "The Dimensions of a Complete Life," at the first National Conference on Christian Education of the United Church of Christ at Purdue University. In response to demands made by conference attendees, King allowed publication of the addresses. With King's consent, the sermons were published by the Christian Education Press in a short book entitled, "The Measure of a Man." The press and King arranged for proceeds to be shared evenly, after the former had recovered its costs of publication. King first developed the theme of "What Is Man?" during his seminary days. King believed the sermon's title to be "one of the most important questions confronting any generation," proposing that man is many things: "a biological being", "a being of spirit" who is "made in the image of God" and "sinners in need of God's divine grace".

King the Theologian

Before reading this short book I had a limited appretiation for Martin Luther King Jr. I only revered him for his social action and not for his theology. Now I realize his elequance as a theologian. This quick-read is life changing and is an amazing perspective on humanity and the nature of his exsistence

Great

Dr. King, as we all know, was a man of intelligence, persistence, devotion, and respect, and this book inspires all of those qualities in each of us. I have purchased this book for family members, and they have received its message with the same delight that I did. I highly suggest reading this or buying as a gift for a friend in need of a little inspiration.

Enlightening and Refreshing

This writing was quite interesting. Dr. King as we all know was a great man and leader. In this writing he points out a great way to look at the world, and all human beings within this world. Throughout this writing he speaks of God and how God is the way. A very enlightening piece of reading.

Cross Cultural

I have used this book in Leadership Training for years. Recently I used it at Gindiri College of Theology in Nigeria. The huge 250 pound student body president said it caused him to weep, thinking about repentance. This was one of the only books graduating senior received this year, because the cost of books is such a high % of their annual income. In the US, white High School students have returned years later to say this small book changed their thinking and understanding of who Dr. King really was. Mine too. Thanks

Eloquence

What an amazing man. King writes with such love for humanity and such desire for an improved society. Though I am not religious, I am very engaged by his discussions of faith. It is this thesis of the role of humanity and the notion of how precious life is that draw me to this book every few months for inspiration.
