When the wealthy merchant, Maharabibi, seeks to purchase the idol, Chundragara is forced to refuse him. The craftsman cannot bring himself to sell the one thing that makes sense of his life. Refusing to take no for an answer, Maharabibi steals the sculpture, leaving the old man bereft. Unable to reproduce his masterpiece, Chundragara pursues the merchant downstream, leaving the forest for the first time in his life to face a world he barely understands - a world of miraculous rituals, nameless cities, unknown oracles and alien gods.

The proverbs of Jazrael were originally transcribed in 1977 in Southern Africa by the 11-year old Richard Stanley. These writings were presumed lost until 2024 when they were rediscovered by Momo Mila Groβ who reworked and rewrote the material to create this book.
