The author is an amiable fellow who enjoys meeting people from around the world. The reader can happily ride along to vicariously see seldom visited places in Asia. Maslin uses smooth arrogance to intersperse history with the same level of assurance as his own opinions. Sometimes these mini history lessons are enlightening and sometimes they're completely jaded beyond reason.The reader is left to sort it all out through research. It seems easy for him judge others without becoming a part of a community. The author is only an observer, eager to judge, and eager to accept camaraderie along with freebies.
It's worth the read but it's far from my favorite.
