Hans Christian Andersen's classic story is beautifully adapted for young readers. When the little mermaid gives up her voice in exchange for legs and a chance to meet her beloved human prince, she earns a real human soul. Step 3 Readers are perfect for children who are ready to read to themselves. At forty-eight pages, Step 3 books are both longer and slightly more difficult than Step 2 books. This level includes some more challenging vocabulary and concepts, though the meaning is made clear through context and illustrations.
It is so refreshing to find a story of the Little Mermaid that is true to Hans Christian Anderson's original tale. I use it every year at Storytime, contrasting it with Disney's version. I love this easy-to-read book!
My favourite childhood book.

There's something really beautiful about the way this book tells Andersen's depressing story of intense, painful emotions using extremely simple language for children. There are sentences like "she felt so sad, she thought her heart would break" and "tomorrow I will be foam on the sea. I have lost everything I love." Wow. I'm definitely not a child anymore, but I still read this book sometimes. It's so lovely and sad, though as a child I didn't see it that way... I just liked how in the pictures the mermaids had different coloured shell-bras, and such.
